Psychotherapy: What to Expect

Expect to be treated with respect and without judgment in an environment that is warm, safe and comfortable. Expect me to engage with you – this is interactive psychotherapy. But you’re in charge of what we talk about.

Our first appointment

We will sit down together and talk about what you want. We'll clarify what's needed. You'll tell me at least some of your history and background. My expectation is that you will leave with a sense of where we’re going, understanding of what our first steps will be, and very likely with useful things to begin to do as well. My goal is that you will leave our first session feeling understood, hopeful and empowered.

I’ve studied and trained in many counseling modalities – including psychodynamic, interpersonal, cognitive behavioral, EMDR, IPNB (interpersonal neurobiolgy), neurofeedback, and others. In my experience, if we are really present to what is going on, then whatever is needed in terms of a skill to be learned, technique to be used, or change to be practiced will quickly become clear. We will proceed at the pace that is right for you. We all have an innate ability to heal and grow, and it’s important to trust that.

I’ll bring my intuition and empathy as well as my experience and training to our conversations. Together we’ll sort out what’s needed and how to get there.

How long will it take?

That could be anywhere from one session to many sessions. It depends on many factors – for example, how much you want to have happen, how long the issues have been present, how much time you feel able to give to the process in between our sessions.

Part of the process is evaluating where we are, how far we've come, and where we can still go.

How often?

Most people come once a week, although some choose to come more or less often. Sessions last about 45 to 50 minutes. Occasionally, a client from outside of NYC comes for double sessions scheduled less often to minimize commute time.

What does it cost?

Good counseling can make a dent in your budget, just like a great vacation does. It is an investment in yourself, in your well-being, in fewer health problems, in getting more out of your life.

Health insurance

If you have an out-of-network benefit, you should get reimbursed for a portion of my fee, possibly the majority of it. The amount of the reimbursement will depend on your plan.

Confidentiality

Except in certain legally defined circumstances, what we talk about in my office stays here.

Cancellations

If you need to cancel an appointment with less than 24 hours notice, our agreement is that you will be responsible for my fee.

If you have any other questions about what to expect, please call 212-877-6923 or email and I’ll do my best to answer them.
